What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy (derived from the Greek words "Homeos" meaning Similar and "Pathos" meaning suffering) is a branch of medicine which works on the principle of "Like Cures Like"; i.e. a disease is cured with medicines producing in a healthy person those symptoms which are experienced by the patient. So, that medicine, which is the closest match between the patient's symptoms and those it will produce in a healthy body, is given in small doses.

Which ingredients are used in homeopathic medicines?

The ingredients used in homeopathic medicines are derived from natural substances like plants, animal products, minerals, etc. which are subjected to a small procedure to bring out their medicinal properties. Currently, around 2000 such ingredients are used. Examples: Charcoal, Salt, Pollen, etc.

How does a homeopath choose a remedy for an individual?

The homeopath notes the patient's case, identifies his/her individual symptoms (e.g. basic nature, lifestyle, stress factors, family history of disease, etc.) and selects the medicine which best matches these symptoms.

Do homeopathic medicines have any side-effects?

Generally, homeopathic medicines do not have any side-effects. However, minor intensification of symptoms may occur in some cases indicating boosting of the immune system to cure the disease. Such intensification of symptoms in turn depends upon the patient’s physical, mental and emotional history. Hence, Homeopathic medicines should always be taken after consulting a certified and experienced homeopath.

Is it safe to take homeopathic remedies along with regular medicines?

Yes. In fact, regular drugs (e.g. antibiotics etc.) become vital along with homeopathic medicines in certain cases like diabetes, heart problems, accidents, etc. However, all these drugs should be taken or discontinued under the guidance of an expert homeopath.

Is homeopathy safe for children, pregnant women, Senior Citizens and animals?

Absolutely.....Homeopathy is for people of all ages and conditions as well as animals.

How long does it take for homeopathy to work?

Although it starts working instantly, Homeopathy may take minutes or even years to heal a patient depending upon his/her case history, immune system, lifestyle, habits, stress factors and personality. For instance, a case of chronic asthma will take more time to heal than that of a simple cough. However, the best matching homeopathic medicine has fast and desired effect.

Why is a homeopathic consultation long?

The first Homeopathic consultation primarily comprises case-taking of physical, mental and emotional history, which lasts for 1/2-1 hr. such a case helps in discovering the root cause of the patient's sickness. As homeopathy treats root cause of any disease, a complete case history is essential. Subsequent visits (follow-ups) take lesser time (around 10-15 min).

How are homeopaths trained?

In India, homeopaths have to compulsorily study 5-1/2 years' degree course including 1-year internship. Subjects are the same as allopathy, along with homeopathic science and philosophy. MD course is for 3 years.

Can homeopathy help in cases of poisoning, accidents, drowning and other emergencies?

In all emergencies like poisoning, accidents, drowning, etc, it is always necessary to revive/save the patient by means of life-saving drugs and some emergency procedures like life-support by oxygen, tube insertion in windpipe to facilitate breathing (intubation), etc. Thus in the initial hours, emergency and life support treatment is required. Once the patient's condition is stable, homeopathy can be used to rebuild his immunity and cure him faster.

How can homeopathy help in fractures, cuts, wounds, etc?

In case of some fractures, cuts, wounds, etc. surgery becomes vital. Homeopathic medicines can be given later to boost healing and also as an antiseptic.

Homeopathy was discovered in Germany by a physician named Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in 1790
